Wasteland – dog rescue in the outskirts of Athens

Anything I say about this part of Athens will not be enough. Anything you read about it is not enough. Even if you visit once, like I did one morning in January 2018, you won't get the whole picture of what's going on there. I have been avoiding the place for too long, mainly because I feared I could not handle it. When Ellie asked my directly if I was willing to go there, I couldn't say no. It was time for me to stop hiding and face the reality. The stray dogs my camera managed to film are not even the 1/3 of the ones living in the streets there. You see we were there at about ten o'clock, when they had already had their first meal and most of them were asleep somewhere. The stories I heard from the local volunteer make a perfect horror novel. Dogs found hanged, stray dogs abused and beaten, volunteers beaten and taken to the hospital because they tried to defend the strays, horse left tied in the sea to drown. Everything is possible there. One of my neighbors confessed to me that her cousin drove all the way to Aspropyrgos one day to dump her own dog. There are a couple of charities working there, and what they is hardcore rescue. If you wish to help the local volunteers, you can donate to Penny Marathon:

  1. How can we support this woman, get dog food for her. She is a champion for animals. God Bless her, why aren’t there more like her?

  2. Thank you for bringing this to the worlds attention. How can you not cry seeing all the suffering and one person taking this humanitarian job on, alone. I hope more will feel the pain for the one champion and the multitudes of dogs. God Bless her.

  3. Oh my gosh. This πŸŽ₯ was πŸ’™ breaking. Thanks for saving one dog…..a drop in the bucket. Very very πŸ˜” sad.

  4. Oh Valia.. This hurts my heart so badly.. But I know this is a story that needs to be told. As I was in Portugal I saw the same things as you did. To leave them behind.. no words.. Just unspoken heartache and sorrow.
Bless you and those that strive to give your very best every single day

  5. This is horrific! Yet, the conditions for animals all over the earth is equally bad, even worse. There is a video on YouTube called “Earthlings” that will break the heart of all who see it unless they are psychopaths. Animals are sentient. They feel pain as humans do. The hearts of humanity as a whole must change if we are to make this earth a better place. It is a heavy burden for those of us who feel for those in this sea of suffering. But, I for one, am willing to carry that burden, as much as in my power to do so, for what is life about, if not to feel.

    1. Annalaura Tau analaura allways i see you in animal step love, πŸ™‹

  6. Breaks my heart and as an animal rights activist it breaks my heart even more😒😒 Must be so overwhelming to see so many dogs homeless and abused, neglected on the streets. Why oh why are the people, the young generations not educated in schools about animal welfare, compassion, they should be taught to desex their pets to take responsibility. I absolutely love the volunteers who try so hard on little money to give those poor furbabies some love, food and company even if it is for a few minutes. It might be a drop in the ocean, but for those dogs it is the only small lifeline they have. If I was there (all the way from New Zealand), I would be the first to volunteer and help. Wish I could do more, I already donate monthly to 4 animal charities overseas and to my own animal groups. My heart and sadness is with all of you and all the dogs. Give at least one dog all my cuddles and love and paw hugs from New Zealand.πŸ˜’πŸ˜’πŸ˜’πŸ™†β€πŸ’™πŸ’–πŸ’šπŸ’•πŸΆπŸΆπŸΆπŸΆπŸ•πŸ•πŸ•πŸ•πŸ•πŸπŸπŸπŸΉπŸΉ

  7. You’re such a beautiful person. Thank you for saving one. I wish I could do something to help. I wish you could send me some dogs. I would find them good homes. They’re all worthy of love. I have so much to give … you’re all just so far away. Thank you for being a wonderful, loving human. Your love may be all they ever know. And knowing that kills me inside. Sending love …β€πŸ’•

  8. OMG that was so sad like If I went there I would be in tears and I will try to rescue all the dogs I want to be a dog rescuer when I go up and a vet I love playing with dogs, I even bring a little bag of dog food around if I find the dog I would try to rescue it with the bag of dog food

  9. I feel numb in an awful way after seeing this.Thoughts and words can’t even express what I feel inside because I don’t even know what they are. I feel horrible for what you witnessed. The more and more I see how nasty more and more people can be the more and more angry I feel. There are many of us trying our best to help the forgotten but you Valia have truly seen some of the most neglected and forgotten. It must have left a pit in your stomach to drive away. Thank you for rescuing the only one you could. This video was quit well done, bit I’m sorry it had to end the way it did. β™‘

  10. Your posts break my heart. I read them and watch your videos because it hurts me for a few minutes, but these poor dogs live it 24/7.

  11. Very sad but there is so many animals leave like this and I don’t think that is ever going to end!!Some people don’t care about animals suffering

    1. Avery Katusa yes that is true. It is so many evils on this earth. My heart and soul crying when I see abused and neglected animals.

  12. My heart is breaking for them all. You get a dog to love n cherish. How can you just drive it out there n leave it? They give you love unconditionally. Hope you never sleep a night without being haunted! God Bless you ladies for doing what you do.

  13. The same happens here in Tenerife the canary islands. All the dog shelters are full and we still find stray dogs on the streets. Me and my wife have rescued many dogs before. We completly understand you guys and we know its not easy. The more people that get invoved in this volentry work the better. That way the local council mite help in nuttering more dogs to get control of the situation. We LOVE you all For doing such a fine act of kindness to Mans best friend.
